Stroke

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so it starts to die. Depending on the location in the brain, the effects on the body can be quite different and debilitating.

Problems stroke survivors face are issues with mobility, speech, oral and written communication, swallowing, day-to-day activities and cognitive functioning. All of these can be treated to improve the patient’s and family’s quality of life.

Our stroke rehabilitation programs are designed to help the patient adjust to mental and physical changes and return to independent living. Our therapy teams can work to retrain portions of the brain and restore lost functions to parts of the body that may have been affected. We also help patients and families understand how to incorporate lifestyle changes that reduce the risk of future strokes or other complications.

Our stroke rehabilitation program features include:

  • Seamless transition back home through inpatient and outpatient care
  • Comprehensive patient and family education
  • Support groups
  • Other specialized services
    • Orthotics
    • Respiratory therapy
    • Neuropsychology
    • Second chance stroke screenings

Different levels of service allow for individualized care every step of the recovery process:

  • Inpatient rehabilitation - an intensive physical, cognitive and psychosocial rehabilitation for a patient who needs 24-hour nursing care. It is geared toward a patient who wants to regain an independent lifestyle, behavioral management and community re-entry.
  • Day treatment- an intensive interdisciplinary therapy program that can stand alone or be used as a step down from inpatient care. This phase is for patients who no longer need 24-hour nursing care.
  • Outpatient rehabilitation- individualized, highly specific treatment designed to continue the patient’s progress toward maximum independence.
