The spinal cord is the major pathway through which information regarding movement and sensation travels between brain and body. Damage to the spinal cord through injury or illness can interrupt the flow of this information resulting in loss of movement and/or sensation below the level of the injury. When this happens at the level of the cervical spine and affects the arms and legs, it is referred to as quadriplegia. Paralysis affecting only the lower body is referred to as paraplegia.
At HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Northern Virginia, our spinal cord rehabilitation program treats:
- All levels of spinal cord injuries from C2 vertebrae to the lumbar spine, L5, S1
- Non-traumatic conditions such as, spinal muscle atrophy and spine surgeries like laminectomies and tumor surgeries
- Spinal viruses like Traverse Myelitis, Guillane-Barre Syndrome and Multiple Sclerosis
- Congenital defects like Spina Bifida
Rehabilitation for spinal cord injury patients is an intricate and complicated process that requires a team of experts to enhance a patient’s level of physical, emotional and psychological ability. HealthSouth’s program combines neuro-rehabilitation and advanced treatments. This includes education and training for patients and their families, strengthening and training to maximize recovery and current rehabilitation technology options to maximize independence in self-care, activities of daily living and mobility skills. Individualized treatment plans are designed to help patients achieve the highest possible level of independence.
